Prominent Neighborhoods of Alexandria
Old Town
The most iconic neighborhood in the city, Old Town features beautiful historic architecture, a thriving and walkable Downtown scene, and plenty of great shopping and dining hotspots. But while Old Town is known for its quaint old-timey charm and elegant rowhouses, it also offers a number of newer developments.
Del Ray
Northwest of Old Town, Del Ray is a favorite for its artsy vibe, its booming restaurant scene, and its excellent Farmers Market. Regular events, like Art on the Avenue and First Thursday, get residents out and active, while legendary music hall The Birchmere hosts superb shows all year round. Del Ray is also the site of a number of prominent new developments—including National Landing, Amazon’s HQ2, and the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus.
Rosemont
Located to the west of Old Town, Rosemont is a quieter community of tree-lined streets and large, sophisticated homes with an elegant suburban feel. It’s an easy walk for most residents into neighboring Del Ray, where a number of cafes, shops, and restaurants can be enjoyed along Mount Vernon Ave. Residents in the southern portion of the neighborhood can also walk to the King Street Metro Station for an easy commute into Arlington or DC.
West End
Alexandria’s largest neighborhood, West End is both diverse and friendly… and the center of the area’s craft beer scene. West End is home to major local breweries such as Port City Brewing Company and Aslin Beer Co, but it’s also known for its international dining scene, its beautiful parks, and its historic sites. Some outdoor favorites include the Dora Kelly Nature Park and the Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center.

New Developments Coming Soon to Alexandria
Potomac Yard Metrorail Station
Commuting to and from DC is about to get (even) easier, thanks to Alexandria’s coming-soon metro station. The Potomac Yard Metrorail Station is a planned future stop on the Yellow and Blue lines of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Metrorail.
VT Innovation Campus
Virginia Tech recently announced their plans for a new VT Innovation Campus… right here in Alexandria. Partnering with Lionstone Investments, Virginia Tech plans to craft a unique mixed-use development in National Landing. The one million square foot grad campus will include classrooms, centers for research and development, offices, and event space. There will also be areas for public open space and retail businesses.
Amazon HQ2
Amazon plans to develop a second headquarters (HQ2) just beyond the future VT campus—possibly breaking ground as soon as 2020. The projected headquarters will include two 22-story office towers with ground-floor retail. Designs also include a number of terraces, green spaces, and dog parks. The new headquarters is projected to employ about 12,000 of Amazon’s 25,000 workers.
